The Accademia Gallery is famous above all for the presence of Michelangelo's sculptures: the Prisoners, the San Matteo and of course the David.
See the 5.17-meter-high statue of the biblical hero David, one of the favorite subjects of Florentine art. The statue soon became the symbol of the defense of civil liberties embodied by the Republic of Florence, an independent city-state threatened on all fronts by more powerful rival states and by the hegemony of the Medici family.
In adjacent rooms, once belonging to 2 former convents, you can admire important masterpieces collected by the Academy of Design, the Academy of Fine Arts and by now extinct convents.
Recently, the gallery has been enriched by an important collection of ancient musical instruments from the Cherubini Conservatory and which occupy the Museum of Musical Instruments of the Gallery.
